Bernheim
was one of twelve public gardens invited to set up a display garden on
the terrace around the United States Botanic Garden in Washington D.C.
this past summer. Bernheim’s garden
was a part of an exhibit called A Sense of Place: Public Gardens Across
America that ran from May 26 through October 8, 2007.
The theme of Bernheim’s garden was Islands
Within Woodlands which showcased
the unique grassland community called cedar glades. The garden design
was selected to illustrate Bernheim’s
landscape design philosophy that incorporates elements of design found
in nature. Bernheim is building plant collections composed
of native species and their cultivars and non-native species that:
Conserve biological diversity
Are ecologically sound
Provide a unique sense of place
Are experientially rich and educational
